Trucker hat color combos that sell
After years of bulk runs, the same colorways keep coming back. Here is what moves, why, and how to pair decoration with it. Battle Born Clothing will proof any combo you want; this is just what we see work.
The reliable five
| Colorway | Who buys it | Pairs with |
|---|---|---|
| Black/White | Everyone. Crews, brands, events. | White or grey thread; natural leather patch |
| Charcoal/Black | Contractors, oilfield, mining | White, orange or safety-green thread; leather patch |
| Heather Grey/Black | Breweries, retail brands | Black thread; leather patch |
| Loden/Black | Outdoor, ag, breweries | Tan or cream thread; leather patch |
| Navy/White | Schools, corporate, marine | White or gold thread; leather patch |
Earth tones for outdoor and ag
Brown/Khaki, Army Olive/Tan, Coyote Brown and the camo fronts (112P, 112PFP) sell for ranch, hunting and fishing brands. A natural leather patch is the default on all of them; it reads as part of the hat. If you embroider, use cream or tan thread, not white.
Split colors for teams and events
Royal/White, Red/Black, Red/White, Kelly/White and Orange/Black are team colors first. Flat-embroidered wordmarks in the contrast color are the usual pairing. 3D puff block letters (quoted per job) suit these the best.
Building a three-colorway order
The safest retail or merch assortment is one dark, one light, one brand color. Black/White, Heather Grey/Black, and whatever matches your logo. Weight the dark hat heaviest; it sells first.
| Colorway | Share | Qty |
|---|---|---|
| Black/White | 50% | 72 |
| Heather Grey/Black | 30% | 43 |
| Loden/Black (brand color) | 20% | 29 |
All three carry the same patch, so the whole 144 prices at the 144+ tier: $18.50 each on the 112, $2,664.00 total.
Matching thread and leather to the hat
- High contrast reads from a distance. White on black, black on grey.
- Low contrast (tan on olive, grey on charcoal) looks premium up close and is what lifestyle brands pick.
- Leather patches engrave dark on natural tan. They look right on nearly every colorway; they look best on earth tones and black.
- Two-tone hats: match thread to the back mesh color for a tied-together look.
Thread colors on two-tone hats
On a two-tone 112 the front panel is one color and the mesh and bill are another. The logo has to work against the front only. Black/White means a black front: white, grey or red thread. Heather Grey/Black means a grey front: black, navy or forest thread. If your logo has a required color that fights the front, pick the hat to suit the logo, not the other way around. A leather patch sidesteps the problem entirely, which is a big reason it is popular on busy or unusual colorways.
What does not sell
Single bright colors (all-red, all-royal) as the only option. Pastels for crews. More than four colorways in one small order; the long tail sits on the shelf.
Need to see it before you commit? Every order gets a digital proof on the actual hat color. See the full Richardson 112 color list on the product page.
Questions
Can you proof the same logo on several hat colors?
Yes. Ask for a multi-color proof and we show each colorway with the thread or patch on it.
Do thread colors cost extra?
No. Up to 15 colors are included in the standard embroidery price as long as the design stays under 6,000 stitches.
